Microsoft sets Windows 7 launch for Oct. 22

Posted by admin On October - 19 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Computerworld – Microsoft will put Windows 7 on store shelves and computer makers will have systems ready to sell with Vista’s successor on Oct. 22, the company confirmed today.

Microsoft will also offer discounted or free upgrades to Windows 7 to users who buy PCs in the months leading up to the operating system’s launch in a program dubbed “Windows Upgrade Option,” a company spokeswoman said Tuesday. Although the name is new, the program had been reported as early as January, when a usually-reliable Web site leaked information about the deal, including its July 1 kick-off.

Until today, Microsoft had been coy about naming a release date for Windows 7, although it edged toward a timetable last month. Both Bill Veghte, the senior vice president who runs the Windows Business unit, and Steven Sinofsky, the senior vice president of the Windows engineering group, said then that Windows 7 was on track for the holiday selling season, and would make the final milestone — called “release to manufacturing,” or RTM — in mid-August. Today, however, other company spokespersons said Microsoft is shooting for RTM by the end of July. More

Which would you give up: TV, Mobile, or Web

Posted by admin On July - 19 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

In the latest global survey conducted by Reader’s Digest, 11 of 15 countries say they’d turn off the TV before they’d silence their mobile phone or log off the internet.

Women, especially, will forgo their favourite shows, voting to do so by a greater percentage than men in all but four countries.

Younger respondents are more likely to take a pass on TV, but older folks don’t necessarily shun the online experience.

In Singapore, not a single person over 45 voted to stop surfing.

Amazingly, Brazil is the only nation to pick the internet (and by such a huge margin). Brazil has some of the lowest rate or internet use worldwide, with just 35 users per 100 people. (The US and UK both have 72) Brazil’s cost to hook up is also high, about $26 a month, compared with $7.40 in Germany.

Funny, Americans voted to give up TV, yet sit in front of the flat screen for an average of 4 hours, 37 minutes a day. But if the decision had been made by respondents over 45, the mobile phone would have gotten the boot instead.

Meanwhile, Canadians pay some of the highest rates for their mobile phone plans, which maybe why they have the lowets number of mobile phone users among the Western countries polled.

Google to launch its own PC operating system

Posted by admin On July - 11 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Google has plans for its own personal computer operating system, it announced on its blog, setting up another clash between the Internet search giant and PC software supremo Microsoft.

“We’re announcing a new project,” said the Mountain View, California-based company, revealing the system would be based on its nine-month-old Chrome browser and would be an open source operating system initially targeted at netbooks.

The move is “our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be,” Google said in a statement posted late Tuesday.

The search engine giant said it would open-source the code for “Chrome OS” for user input and that netbooks running the system would be available by the middle of next year.

“Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds,” the company said.

Cant wait to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? Thinking about downloading a pirated copy? Think again, as it could contain malware.

Cybercriminals are pushing blackhat search engine optimization tactics to target the most popular file sharing and P2P networks, pursuing those interested in upcoming movie releases and in particular taking advantage of the sizeable Harry Potter fan base wanting to download the movie in advance of its screening.

Fans are baited with text like: Watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince online free. What appears to be a legitimate looking website then redirects you to a video offer which prompts you to download and install the additional streamviewer. The streamviewer, however, is installing malware. Suddenly, missing out on a sneak peek is the least of your worries!
